Debating at WUDC 2015: The VDCH-Teams
Yesterday the 35th World University Debating Championships were officially started by the grand Opening Ceremony. The German speaking debating circuit is represented by a strong delegation this year. Seven members of the VDCH – the Association of German Speaking University Debating Societies are comprised of ten teams and ten adjudicators.

The Berlin IV – European Debates Conference 2014 has its winners: Emilia Carlqvist and Peer Klüßendorf from Lund Debate Society won the final in a three-to-two split decision. Peer and Emilia debated in Opening Government as the team "Dixendorf". The motion of the final read: "This House believes that the EU should force member states to adopt socially progressive legislation (e. g. same-sex marriage, abortion rights, ethnic and religious minority rights)."

Kai Dittmann began cautiously. “It often is not easy to argue for free trade,” said the 2014 World Champion in the category English as a Second Language (ESL). “But it is the marginal benefits that sum up.” Together with John Eltringham, who works at the American Academy in Berlin, he represented the government side in a public debate on the first evening of the Berlin Intervarsity. The question debated was: “Does Europe need the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)?”

General assembly of VDCH elects new executive board
The general assembly of VDCH (Verband der Debattierclubs an Hochschulen), the umbrella organisation of over 70 german-speaking debating clubs at universities, has elected a new executive board on August 31. Florian Umscheid (Berlin/Bamberg) was elected president by the representatives; vice presidents are Tobias Kube (Marburg), Jennifer Holm (Heidelberg) and Alexander Labinsky (Dresden).
The Achte Minute congratulates the new board and wishes them best of success for their term of office!

EUDC Manchester: The preliminary rounds

Since sunday 214 teams from Europe , 19 of which are from VDCH- Clubs, are competing in the European Universities Debating Championship (EUDC). The Manchester Debating Unions is hosting the biggest event in the european debating circuit this year at the University of Manchester. Here are some insights into the tournament, the debates and how the German teams did.
The locations
The teams live in cosy small apartments with single and double bed rooms around the campus. The distance to the debate rooms is very short - it takes teams 5-10minutes. ...

Berlin presents Worlds bid
The Berlin Debating Union (BDU) has made a decision: They want to bring the Worlds to Germany! On Saturday, Patrick Ehmann, John Eltringham and Cloud Ramasendaran are going to present their bid for convening the World Universities Debating Championships at the Oxford IV.
The support of VDCH, the Association of Debating Societies at Universities, facilitated the decision of Berlin Debating Union: “Only because we know we have the German debating circuit to support us we dare to do this,” BDU president Patrick admits. Die Bewerbungsphase für die nächste ZEIT-DEBATTEN-Saison ist eröffnet
Stefan Hübner, Vizepräsident des Dachverbandes VDCH, hat soeben die Bewerbungsphase für Turnierausrichter in der nächsten ZEIT-DEBATTEN-Saison eröffnet. Mit der nächsten Saison starten die ZEIT DEBATTEN in ihre zehnte Auflage! Insgesamt sind neun Turniere zu vergeben. In der kommenden Saison wird es vier ZEIT DEBATTEN geben, sowie die 11. Deutsche Debattiermeisterschaft, die im Rahmen der ZEIT DEBATTEN stattfinden wird. Außerdem sollen wieder vier Regionalmeisterschaften ausgetragen werden.
Das Auftaktturnier der ZEIT DEBATTEN soll im Oktober/November, eine ZEIT DEBATTE im Januar, eine ZEIT DEBATTE im Februar/März, eine ZEIT DEBATTE im Mai und die DDM im Juni stattfinden. Die Regionalmeisterschaften sind im April geplant. Stefan ...
