Alex against Alex – Retrospection on the crosstalk in Dresden
Again it’s Tuesday night. Time for a bit of debating at Dresden Debating Union (DDU). Today the “Crosstalk” is scheduled, like one could read in the announcement of the weekly newsletter. “Crosstalk” means that only two speakers compete against each other. Each one of them may speak three and a half minutes for two times. At the end of the evening there is a winner, who could defend himself successfully in all the preliminary rounds.
Like every week, the motions are important for lively debates. In opposite to the usual debates, this time the motions were drawn. Afterwards the speakers had time to prepare themselves, if producers of contaminated food should be denounced in the public or if the federal republic of Germany may inspect the post of soldiers from Afghanistan. The winner of each debate was the one, who could prove his arguments and deny the ones of his opponent in the best way. If the arguments were always true, was only playing a minor role.
The final took place between Alex and Alex. So the name of the winner was already known before the beginning of the debate. Both speakers were competing in a very nice way and Alexander Labinsky, the winner of last years’ “crosstalk”, was also the winner of this semesters’ edition. Alex number two, the rookie who came out of nothing and could leave six other competitors behind, was honored with the words “a new star is born”.
