Jacobs Open 2011
Fairy-tale romantic, business-like activity and ambitious ideas: all of this and even more offers the Hanseatic City of Bremen. If you want to experience more of this city, you are invited to participate in the Jacobs Open of Jacobs University Bremen Debating Society (JUB Debating Society). The tournament in English takes place from 28 to 30 January 2011 and will be held in British Parliamentary Style (BPS).
Chief Adjudicator (CA) is Jens Fischer (Berlin Debating Union), who won the Jacobs Open 2010 together with Henrik Maedler (JUB Debating Society). Jens already served as CA at the European Championships 2006 in Berlin, was final judge at the Worlds 2009 in Antalya and has also judged at the Jacobs Open in the past years. This year he won the UCU Open together with Anne Valkering from Amsterdam, the Schobbe-Cup in Frankfurt and the Masters’ Cup in Eisenach. Furthermore, he is the current president of the EUDC Council.
Five preliminaries, semi-finals and a grand final are scheduled. Friday starts with an adjudication workshop, continues with an opening ceremony after dinner, the first preliminary round and a social night. On Saturday, four more prelims take place and afterwards the hosts are looking forward to giving the day an enjoyable ending with the traditional “Black Tie Havana Night”. Sunday starts smoothly and comfortably with a brunch at 10 a.m., afterwards there are the semi-finals and finally in the afternoon the grand final will take place. For better convenience of the debaters, all the prelims, the semi-finals and the “Black Tie Havana Night” will be held on the park-like campus of Jacobs University Bremen (JUB).
There is a team cap of 32 and the n-1 rule applies for adjudicators. The registration fee is 80 Euros for each team and 25 Euros for each adjudicator. It includes accommodation, the two socials and all meals. All participants will find a place to sleep in one of the four different colleges that are also situated on the campus of JUB. Registration is already open through a registration form which is available online on the website of the Jacobs Open 2010. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact Natasha Ovchar, convenor of Jacobs Open, through the e-mail address n.ovchar[at]jacobs-university.de.
Jacobs University Bremen (JUB) is a private and independent research university. The website of the tournament tells that “students come from over 99 different countries, with the largest national group making up no more than 25% of the student population. English is the language of instruction and communication.” Students of the JUB originally founded JUB Debating Society as IUB Debating Society back in 2002. Later on the society joined the Verband der Debattierclubs an Hochschulen (VDCH). The students are mainly debating in British Parliamentary Style (BPS). Since 2005 they have been organizing the Jacobs Open annually where debaters from all over Europe take part.
