The European Universities Debating Championship 2014 in Zagreb begins

This Monday, the 18th of August, the European Universities Debating Championship (EUDC) 2014 starts in Zagreb, Croatia. For the next six days, 216 teams from 33 countries will compete in nine preliminary rounds, quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final for the title of European Debate Champion in the Open Break and in the category English as a Second Language (ESL). A list of all VDCH* teams will follow shortly.

Nikos Bosse will be responsible for covering all news around the Zagreb EUDC for Achte Minute. Regular updates on Twitter will be published under #EUDC2014.

Schedule Overview

Logo Zagreb EUDCOn Monday, all teams will arrive and register. From 17.00 to 18.00, the Pre-Council meeting will take place in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This meeting serves to prepare the meeting of the European Council that will, among other things, decide who will host the EUDC 2016. At 18.00, there will be Briefings and words of welcome of the organisers and Chief Adjudicators (CAs). Later in the evening, an opening ceremony and party in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb will take place. Participants will be able to go through all exhibitions before partying on the outer terrace of the building.

From Tuesday, August 19th, to Thursday, August 21st, the preliminary rounds will take place, three of them each day. The evenings are filled with socials. On Tuesday, the annual Women’s night will be held in the Dramatic Club in Zagreb. Participants will spend Wednesday evening in a rock club called Vintage Industrial Bar. Thursday is dedicated to the Break Night, where the CAs announce the teams that made it through the preliminary rounds and can compete in the Quarter Finals on Friday. Break Night will take place at the Gallery Club, which is an open party location near the Jarun Lake.

On Friday, August 22nd, the Open and ESL quarter- and semi-finals will take place. In the evening, a social is planned at a location called Mochvara where usually concerts, exhibitions and performances are shown. Participants will be able to sleep a little longer on Saturday, August 23rd, as the official program, namely the ESL and Open finals only start at 16.00. Later in the evening, the Championship dinner, closing ceremony and farewell party will be held in a former Pub called K Pivovari.

Relevant information

Most information relevant to participants is compiled in the Zagreb EUDC 2014 Newsletter PDF. For the Zagreb Euros, the Organisers plan to use a Web App in order to facilitate all issues associated with the tab. This app allows to check one’s registration status, give feedback on judges and speakers and view a countdown timer to the next round.
